Sometimes the solder will travel down the lead and get to the
top-side
pad, (which never connects to anything) making it very hard to
desolder.
If you are etching and drilling your own boards you could place a pad
with rounded edges on the top. Then place a pin with a pad diameter
that is less than the diameter of the drill you plan to use.
