You can set multiple footprint attributes already, but I think what
happens is that the sch->pcb conversion takes the first one it can
find.  So not quite the same thing...

The other issue (which people are trying to solve) is that often the
alternate footprints have different pinouts.  7805 is a good example --
you can get it in at least TO92, TO220 (both 3-pin but different
pinouts) and SO8 (more pins altogether).

I wrote a plugin which you can find at gedasymbols.org .  It should
probably be integrated at some point, but I haven't gotten a lot of
feedback.
