This was the ticket. The symbols LOOKED like they were on the grid but must 
have been just slightly off. Even with snap off (to connect off-snap-grid) or 
 back on (always off by a pixel or two) I wasn't able to establish connections.

Is there any plan to change this sensitivity? It might be nice to have a 
snap-to-connection-endpoint function. That way it would matter where on the 
grid objects were, as long as you were within a few pixels-percent-of-zoom to 
the pin it would do the job. It ought not to be that hard to add, is this just 
a lack of interest thing? This is my hobby, not my day job, so I don't know 
how relevant it is to the pros out there.
