Not to start a flame of any sort, but just to let you know the POV of
the other side. Potential employers now regularly troll facebook,
myspace, linkedin, twitter, blogs, etc when researching prospective
employees. None of which I belong to, btw. Engineering/IT houses are
also starting to include mailinglists, forums, etc.
Even current employers have taken to monitoring what current employees
are doing on their own time sans employer name (blogs, etc).
It's my opinion that what I do in my off time, FOSS or otherwise, public
or private, is _my_ damn business. As such, not including my last name
gives me plausible deniability. The opposite also hold true, I don't
use corporate email for FOSS work, and I don't mention employers,
customers, vendors or contractors when interacting with FOSS
communities. This is out of respect for the privacy of those entities.
I'm not their PR person, good, bad, or otherwise.
I respect your opinion, and even agree with it. Too many people remove
their last name and think that gives them license to troll, flame, etc.
But that doesn't mean that's what every "name obfuscator" is up to.
Ok, I'm done. Thanks for reading my rant. :-)
Jason.
