Thanks everyone for the quick answers, which give credence to my initial hunches.  File input is better anyway, because then I have built-in logging capability.  I was 
thinking about doing some sort of keyed logs, so that I could then have a second program parse the logs (my game is a sort of simple AI testbed).  As a friend of mine 
would say, 

"That is sooooo meta!"
