Thanks for the hint. 
This is indeed way more simple. 
And it works in windows too :-) 
(winXP, in the case of the student). 

Minor side effect: Unlike the PWD environment variable, the dot is not 
expanded in the library window of gschem. So the local symbols just show 
up under "." rather than the name of the local directory.
