It was overlooked and left out of the 20050609 snapshot but was fixed
in a later patch to CVS.  It works for me, and you should see the bottom
status line change as you hit the '/' key with the charactors "_/" and
"\_" cycling to indicate the mode.

The control key restarts the line at the current cursor position
in the gtk version.  You have to use the menu Settings->Enable all direction lines.
