Yep. You have to teach them to learn, not the specifics of every  
technology.

Back when I was on the staff at MIT, I used to supervise  
undergraduate research projects and theses in both EECS and physics.  
One of my students went to work for Tektronix after graduation. He'd  
worked with CCD's in my lab, and Tek hired him to develop CCD's as  
targets in extremely fast CRT scopes. However, he was a quick study  
and within a few months had become an expert on electron optics and  
extremely broadband deflection structures. Much trickier than load  
lines...
