Well, it at least rules out some of my less standard code as a root
cause.

git HEAD pango doesn't help - which rules out the bug I referred to.

I hesitate to ask, but could you try git head cairo (or cairo 1.9.6)?

Are you on 32bit / 64bit?

I'm fairly sure there must be a recipe to get this working - possibly it
will involve switching between native OS X text handling support in
pango / cairo, to freetype + fontconfig.
