Regarding choices of distros, I would recommend Debian-based distros
like Ubuntu as the package system, Synaptic, provides access to an
enormous amount of applications. If users find that software
installed by default is insufficient, they can readily find and
install software that will meet their needs. The Synaptic Package
Manager makes package installation and removal quick and easy. Bryant chimed in this thread, and so I would wonder if there is something that would provide a collaboration point that folks could use at multiple conferences. I liked the idea of a little booklet that could be handed out, with options such as downloading an iso image of the collection or providing the opportunity to check out and install the software ala carte. --
