It's straightforward and well commented: easy to modify even for me  
(I'm no Perl expert). I seem to have coaxed it into doing what I want  
without difficulty. When the sims take six hours, who cares how slow  
the preprocessor is? The key is that the code is comprehensible from  
an application point of view. Maybe it looks ugly to a Perl  
specialist, but I suspect code beautiful to a Perl specialist would  
be incomprehensible to me.
