Of course. It won't work if there is no printed designator. But usually 
there is.

No problem. As long as you are within an inch or so it's ok. The board 
I've got in fab right now is 16" by 16", finding anything on there for 
someone who didn't design it would be like the proverbial needle in the 
haystack.

Better not. Me and software writing are not compatible. Also, in the 
MS-Windows world you can buy Gerber viewers with OCR and they aren't 
terribly expensive. So for a hardcore tux afficionado there would still 
be the chance to run one of those in a virtual machine.
