   ...and problematic.  Comparators are designed to run in saturation  
pretty much all the time in open-loop circuits, usually driving some  
form of logic circuit.  They are also designed for fast recovery from  
saturation.  Many comparators (most I think, at least years ago)  
don't have fully-differential outputs so they can be run in wired-OR  
configurations.

   Someone's ages-old decision to use the same schematic symbol for  
comparators and opamps certainly was unfortunate.  While they're  
similar in some ways, and sometimes you can use an opamp as a  
comparator, they really are different circuits.
