It's not the tools I do not trust, but the current process is that the
manufacturer publishes the basic design rules on his webpage, I have to
translate it to DRC rules for pcb (that's the error-prone part :-) ) and
run DRC.
Ideally there is an open source tool that checks gerber files (the file
format I'm communicating with the manufacturer) and the manufacturer
publishes a set of parametere that this tool can read. So I can improve
the DRC rules for pcb without having the manufacturer in the loop.
Btw, in my day job, I'm doing chip designs, and when we release chips to
manufacturing (within the same company), manufacturing checks every mask
again, though the release process does this on an input file to mask
build.
To make my point clear: I'm very happy with the geda tools-suite
(compared to some crippled (extremely stripped down) versions of $$$
programs doing the same job). I continue using the geda suite and hope I
can do my share to improve it.
