I've been using tut1.pcb - which is pretty simple - as my test case.

But don't put too many brain cycles into it yet; it could very well be
that much/all of the problem is in my code, not PCB proper.  (Probably
not all; there is that odd delay before it starts drawing.  But that's
only a small fraction of the total wall-clock time.)

My HID specifies 0 for poly_dicer, in case that's relevant.
